Horror - The Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is a 2005 horror film directed by Andrew Douglas. It is a remake of the original 1979 film version of the same name. The film is inspired by a real life murder case from November 1974 on Long Island, New York, in which Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot dead six members of his family.

Tuesday

Preliminary excersise

Today i filmed my continuity task. This was, someone walking through the door, sitting down, and exchanging a few lines of dialogue with another person. I needed a variety of different shots, which took on the 180-degree rule, shot reverse shot and matching on action.
Firstly, I had to film the person walking through the door from outside, and then shutting the door after her.
Then i shot the person from inside the building, coming through the door and closing it. These two shots could later be edited together into one smoothly running scene.(match on action)
Secondly, i had to shoot the person walking from the door, over to the table, and hear her exchanging some dialogue with the other person.I then had to do the same from the other side, watching the other person say her words. When doing this, i had to be very precise about where i wanted to place my camera, and where i wanted the person to be in the frame (Thirds rule).
Although this sounds rather easy, it is harder than it looks. We had trouble deciding on where to place the camera, especially when we did the close up shots on the two people. Also, because the table, where the two people were sitting at, was right against the wall, we had to fake some shots. For example, we had to move the person forward and her chair, so that we could place the camera behind her.

Main Task

For my main task i have to film a two minute beginning to a new fiction film.
A fiction film is a story which is not true, and not based on facts. I needed to choose which Genre I wanted to base my film on. Based on the fact that most of my favourite films are Horror films, I have decided to go with this Genre.

2.Choose final cut pro (clipper board icon)
3.file, log and capture.
4.rewind film to beginning.
5.clip settings, video and audio.
6.name the film.
7.press capture now.
8.press escape, turn camera on.
9.click on name of film.
10.press left arrow button to match on action, frame by frame.
11.mark in (i)
12.mark out (o)
13.make subclip (go to modify)
Effects
Motion, crop to get cinema effect.
Double click on sound to make it thinner or thicker, to change the sound level.
Fade in sound.
Video effects, click in between two scenes (tansitions) dissolve, fade in, fade out, black and white.
Sound transition-Audi transition, press cross fade for fading in and out sound.

shot reverse shot

This is used mainly in coversations between two people. while one person is talking, we place the camera over the shoulder of the person listening, to have a close up shot of the person talking, however, we can still see the shoulder of the listener.
Here is the link to a simple video on shot reverse shot...

180-degree rule

The 180° rule is a basic film editing guideline that states that two people in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary line connecting the two people, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle. As you can see in this example, the camera cannot pass the 180-degree line in front, otherwise our viewer would get confused.

Match on action and rule of thirds

Here, we draw a grid on the screen into thirds. Instead of placing the person in the middle of the screen, we put him to the side, along the lines, to create a much more flattering picture.
A match on action is a cut that connects two different views of the same action at the same time of the movement.

Song PD 170

For my preliminary task, I had to film someone walking through a door, sitting at a table, and exchanging dialogue with another person. The camera i used to shoot this was a Song PD 170.

Brief

I have chosen to make a film for my final media task, but before i start to do this, I need to film a preliminary task to practice using the camera and using the editing programme, Final Cut Pro.
Firstly I have to do the preliminary exercise. This includes filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a few lines of dialogue. For my own practice, i need to show a match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.
My main task is to shoot the opening, two minute scene of a new fiction film.
